Packed Ice Bricks in 26.70.21: the useful changes
Packed Ice Bricks give ice builds a masonry-style finish. Mojang's October 20, 2026 notes introduce a blue decorative family: bricks, slabs, stairs, walls and chiselled blocks. The notes say the bricks do not melt and identify a pickaxe as the preferred tool. These are changes documented for Bedrock Preview/Beta 26.70.21, a work-in-progress build. Official 26.70.21 notes
For a first project, sketch a small entrance rather than a whole base. Decide which surfaces need full blocks, which need steps, and where a wall shape would improve the outline. This gives you a short materials checklist before you commit to gathering supplies.
Which version should you check?
Use the version displayed by your game when comparing a result with this guide. A different build should be treated as a separate check, even if the block names look familiar.
| Your game | How to use this page |
|---|---|
| Bedrock Preview/Beta 26.70.21 | The version covered here |
| A later Preview/Beta | Check its notes for subsequent changes |
| Stable Bedrock | Confirm features against that release's own notes |
| Java Edition | Use the matching Java snapshot or release documentation |
Minecraft's official edition guide explains the distinction between Java snapshots and Bedrock's testing channels. Preview uses a separate app on supported platforms; Android uses the beta program. Back up worlds before opting into Android beta. A test world is a sensible place to evaluate new building materials before moving a project you care about. Minecraft's edition and testing guide
The 26.70.21 notes list Preview for Xbox, PlayStation, Windows and iOS, and Beta through Google Play on Android. Availability of a testing channel does not guarantee that an older build will remain selectable. Version and platform information
How do you get the bricks and other shapes?
Mojang describes turning Packed Ice into this building family, but the version notes do not document exact ingredient counts or outputs. We have not verified a version-matched recipe record, so this guide leaves those numbers open. Building-family announcement
When checking recipes in your own build, keep the following record for each shape:
| Record | What to write down |
|---|---|
| Game version | The complete displayed version |
| Result | The exact name of the block or shape |
| Input | Each ingredient and quantity shown |
| Method | The interface in which you found the recipe |
| Output | The number produced by one operation |
Treat this as a verification worksheet, not a supplied recipe. Do not assume the stair or wall recipe has the same yield as the full block. If an entry is missing, leave the material estimate unfinished rather than applying a recipe from another edition.
This page does not yet confirm crafting grids, stonecutter conversions, item IDs, Silk Touch requirements or drops. “Preferred tool” alone does not establish what you will receive when a block breaks.
Ice ambience: check the surroundings as well as the block
The notes describe an Ice block having a chance to emit ambient sound with at least eight ice blocks in each horizontal cardinal direction, air immediately above and water immediately below. Packed, Blue and Frosted Ice also gain distinct sound events. The ambience rule is not stated as a Packed Ice Bricks property. Official sound changes
For a controlled comparison, record your layout and change one condition at a time. A quiet moment is not enough to establish failure when the event is chance-based. This guide has not reproduced the sound in-game and does not claim a guaranteed trigger, waiting time or radius.
Before you scale up a build
| Question | Useful next check |
|---|---|
| Cannot find the expected material? | Record the version, edition and exact search name before looking for a recipe |
| Material estimate seems too high? | Recheck output per operation for each individual shape |
| No ambient sound? | Compare the surroundings with the documented conditions; separate this from a brick test |
| Want to move a design to another release? | Make a copy and compare behavior there before relying on the result |
These are suggested checks, not proof of a particular bug. Keep notes on the version and what you observed so a later change is easier to identify.
Quick questions
Does this establish availability in stable Minecraft? No. This page covers the named test build. Use stable release notes for a stable-world decision.
Can I use an online recipe without checking its edition? Treat it as a lead. Match the version, method and output before using it to plan supplies.
Can I play Minecraft here? This is a reading guide. Use Minecraft's official product and support pages to access the game and its test programs.
What is still missing? Version-matched recipe evidence and direct gameplay checks. Those gaps limit this page's crafting and troubleshooting claims; they do not change which build the article covers.
